Attic Ventilation ~ The Problem and the Solution

Almost everyone is familiar with the suffocating heat stored in the attic on a hot summer day. The sun, beating down on the roof, builds up temperatures of 120 to 130 degrees or more, and this heat radiates through ceilings and walls to the rooms below, often until after midnight. At night, the outside temperature is usually 15 to 25 degrees lower than the highest daytime temperature, however the heat stored in the attic prevents the house from cooling down as it should.Proper ventilation can lower the attic temperature by as much as 50°F  which significantly reduces the home's cooling demands.

gablefanout gable fan inside

Gable Fans are a type of attic vent. Just like attic fans they are used to blow hot air out of the attic while drawing in cooler outside air. The Gable fan would most likely be mounted similar to the ones shown in the photos to the right.

Gable fans are available in both solar as well as hard wired models. They a relatively inexpensive and can be installed by a DIY homeowner with basic skills.

There are a few very good reasons energy-conscious consumers choose to incorporate a gable fan into their home. First, a gable fan will cut down summer cooling costs. Secondly, they can eliminate expensive ice dams during the winter. Thirdly, roofs of homes with a gable fan last longer.
